At what size should a company employ shredding services?
- All businesses in collecting information to conduct business produce sensitive information. Small business should not fear the cost for it is usually cheaper for the shredding company to shred the documents than for a small company to purchase a small shredder and assign an employee to regularly shred. The shredding company is operating with large economies of scale and is usually much more efficient and a plan can be set up which is relatively inexpensive.
If we use a recycler do we still need to shred?
- Recyclers often store materials before recycling and many workers may handle the sensitive information during this process. In addition this material is sold for the best price and is often an overseas buyer and there is a large time lag when this material is stored and when it is recycled. There is a great deal of uncertainty as to when the documents are destroyed. Obviously all this factors increase the risk that customer confidential information can get into the wrong hands.
We do not need to shred.

According to senior management surveys protecting customers information is one of the largest problems facing business today. Severe penalties and legal exposure result from failing to protect customers records and information.
If we store records do we need to destroy them?
- Stored records should be destroyed on a regular basis. A determination must be made for what has value and the governments legal requirement for retention. In the event of a lawsuit each party must provide all relevant records to the opposing counsel within 85 days of defendants initial response. If either of the litigants fails to comply, a summary finding against them will result.
Can we witness the destruction? Can the destruction be moved offsite?
- Absolutely. One can witness the destruction of the documents from being dropped in the truck to the final result of shredded material. Also, if one needs the shredding to occur offsite this is not a problem. The truck will simply drive to its warehouse and perform the shred.
