Featured Community of the Month: Midlothian, IL

Located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago, Midlothian was not officially incorporated until March 17, 1927. In the 1800s, Midlothian had a few farmers but was surrounded by the expanding Bremen Township. By 1854, the Rock Island railroad had expanded from Chicago to Joliet, passing through Midlothian, carrying passengers and commodities.

Some additional interesting facts about Midlothian and things you may not have known about until now:

1. Midlothian’s Fire Department was established in 1924 and was the village’s first step in becoming incorporated. It was initially denied, but went through in 1927. Midlothian was named after its golf course/country club which was a nod to Midlothian, Scotland an ancient borough outside Edinburgh.

2. Midlothian really expanded into a village due to its Country Club. At the turn of the century, a prominent group of business leaders discovered what is now the Midlothian area and decided to build the one of the first 18-hole golf courses in America. This group of business leaders eventually petitioned the Rock Island district to have a train stop right at the golf course & own its own railroad, making it one of two golf courses in the world to have a stop at the course; the other being St. Andrews in Scotland. After business hours, you could find businessmen such as John G. Shedd and A.G. Spalding on the train to Midlothian Country Club.
